Every few years, businesses replace computers. For the company, it is a routine technology refresh. Laptops and desktops that once powered employees, managed projects, connected customers, and helped grow the business are replaced by newer equipment.

But what happens next? That question represents an enormous opportunity.

At Computers 2 Kids (C2K), we see retired technology differently. We don’t just see yesterday’s equipment. We see tomorrow’s homework assignment, résumé, telehealth appointment, college application, job interview, small business, and career.

Across the United States, millions of households remain on the wrong side of the device divide.

According to Digitunity’s analysis of 2024 U.S. Census data, approximately 17.7 million American households – about one in 7.5 – either had no computer or relied solely on a smartphone for internet access.

That matters because some of the most important activities in modern life are significantly easier with a full-size computer: completing coursework, writing a résumé, filling out complex applications, developing digital skills, participating in remote work, and navigating essential services.

A smartphone is an important tool. But a phone and a computer are not interchangeable.

That’s where retired corporate technology can make a tremendous difference. C2K receives donated electronics, securely processes them, refurbishes viable computers, and returns technology to productive use in communities that need it.

Our model transforms: Retired Technology → Refurbished Computer → Digital Access → Opportunity

And it works.

To date, C2K has distributed more than 310,000 computers, impacted more than 1.1 million people, and diverted more than 23.3 million pounds of electronics from landfills. Those aren’t simply recycling numbers. They represent technology being put back to work.

When a company donates technology to C2K, it can create both a social return and an environmental return.

A refurbished laptop may help a student complete coursework, a parent search for employment, a veteran access benefits, a senior communicate with a physician, or an aspiring professional develop new skills. At the same time, reuse extends the productive life of electronics.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency encourages electronics reuse and refurbishment as part of sustainable electronics management because extending product life can reduce waste and the demand for new raw materials. That’s the circular economy in action.

Your company bought the technology. Your employees created value with it. And when you’re finished with it, that same technology can continue creating value for someone else.

Imagine a company replacing 1,000 laptops. Now imagine those computers being securely processed, refurbished where appropriate, and put back into communities. Suddenly, an IT asset disposition decision becomes something much bigger. It becomes an education strategy. A workforce strategy. An environmental strategy. A community-impact strategy. And a digital-equity strategy.

The next time your organization refreshes its technology, don’t just ask: “How do we dispose of these computers?” Ask: “How much more good can these computers still do?”

At C2K, we would love to help you answer that question. Put your retired technology back to work. Donate technology to Computers 2 Kids and turn yesterday’s IT assets into tomorrow’s opportunity.

Every few years, businesses replace computers. For the company, it is a routine technology refresh.
